💎 The Transcendent Wealth: What Are "Al-Baqiyat As-Salihat"?
In Surah Al-Kahf—the chapter believers are urged to recite every Friday for illuminated protection—Allah draws a sharp, unforgettable contrast between temporal earthly allurements and permanent spiritual wealth:
الْمَالُ وَالْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَالْبَاقِيَاتُ الصَّالِحَاتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ أَمَلًا
"Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds (Al-Bāqiyāt Aṣ-Ṣāliḥāt) are better with your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope."
The phrase is repeated in Surah Maryam: "And the enduring good deeds are better with your Lord for reward and better for [one's] return" (19:76).
Human beings spend lifetimes accumulating mortal assets: bank accounts, commercial properties, automobiles, and familial dynasties. Yet at the moment the soul exits the throat, every single worldly asset is instantly confiscated. What remains? Only Al-Bāqiyāt Aṣ-Ṣāliḥāt—the righteous, everlasting deeds that transcend physical mortality and await the servant on the Scales of Eternity.
✨ The Four Beloved Statements: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La Ilaha Illallah, Allahu Akbar
When the Companions inquired what specific deeds constituted these "Everlasting Good Deeds," the Prophet (ﷺ) explicitly identified the four core phrases of divine remembrance. Samurah ibn Jundub (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"The dearest phrases to Allah are four: SubḥānAllāh (Glory be to Allah), Al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah), Lā ilāha illā Allāh (There is no god but Allah), and Allāhu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest). It does not matter with which of them you begin."
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) urged his followers:
"Exert yourselves abundantly in performing Al-Bāqiyāt Aṣ-Ṣāliḥāt." It was asked: "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "The Takbīr (Allāhu Akbar), the Tahlīl (Lā ilāha illallāh), the Tasbīḥ (SubḥānAllāh), the Taḥmīd (Al-ḥamdu lillāh), and Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh."
🌳 Seedlings of Jannah: The Night Journey Encounter with Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
During the miraculous Night Journey and Heavenly Ascension (Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) traversed the seven celestial heavens and met our noble forefather, Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام), leaning his back against the Heavenly Ka'bah (Al-Bayt al-Ma'mur).
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) narrated the immortal message that Ibrahim (AS) sent to the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ):
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I met Ibrahim on the night of my Ascension, and he said to me: 'O Muhammad! Convey my greetings of peace (salam) to your Ummah, and inform them that Paradise has sweet water and wholesome soil, and that it is a vast, open plain (Qī‘ān), and that its seedlings (Ghirāsuhā) are: SubḥānAllāh, Al-ḥamdu lillāh, Lā ilāha illā Allāh, and Allāhu Akbar!'"
Consider this profound cosmological revelation: the territory of Paradise assigned to you is currently an expansive, fertile open plain waiting for cultivation. Every time your tongue articulates "SubḥānAllāh", an exquisite tree with trunks of solid gold and aromatic emerald leaves is instantly planted in your heavenly orchard. A minute spent on your tasbih can construct an entire forest in Jannah.
⚖️ The Heavy Scales: The Concluding Hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari
Imam Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari chose to conclude his monumental masterpiece of authentic Prophetic traditions—comprising over 7,000 narrations—with a single, breathtaking promise:
Shedding Sins Like Autumn Leaves
Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) once passed by a desiccated tree whose leaves were completely withered. He struck the branch with his staff, causing the brittle leaves to scatter and cascade onto the earth in a single flurry. The Prophet (ﷺ) then turned to his companions and said:
"Verily, saying 'Al-ḥamdu lillāh', 'SubḥānAllāh', 'Lā ilāha illallāh', and 'Allāhu Akbar' shed the sins of the servant just as this tree sheds its leaves."
🏛️ The Fifth Treasure: "La Hawla wa La Quwwata Illa Billah"
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (RA) reported that while on an expedition, the Prophet (ﷺ) observed him quietly repeating a supplication under his breath. The Prophet (ﷺ) approached him and said:
"O ‘Abdullah ibn Qays! Shall I not guide you to a treasure from the treasures of Paradise (Kanzun min kunūzil-Jannah)? Say: 'Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh' (There is no power and no strength except with Allah)."
Scholars explain that a "treasure" (Kanz) represents precious wealth that is safely stored away and preserved for a day of dire need. Saying "Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh" is the ultimate declaration of spiritual surrender (Tawakkul): acknowledging that we have no power to avoid sin except by Allah's protection, and no ability to accomplish obedience except by Allah's divine enablement.
🔍 The Theological Architecture of the Four Pillars
Classical scholars of Aqeedah observe that the four phrases of Al-Baqiyat As-Salihat encompass the entirety of Islamic theology:
| Phrase | Theological Concept | Spiritual Action | Internal Realization |
|---|---|---|---|
| SubhanAllah | At-Tanzīh (Transcendence) | Purification & Exoneration | Negates all deficiency, injustice, error, or weakness from Allah. |
| Alhamdulillah | Al-Ithbāt (Affirmation) | Praise & Perpetual Gratitude | Affirms that every perfection, beauty, and blessing belongs exclusively to Allah. |
| La Ilaha Illallah | At-Tawḥīd (Monotheism) | Singling out for Devotion | Cancels all false idols, egos, and loyalties; worships the One True Creator. |
| Allahu Akbar | At-Ta‘ẓīm (Magnification) | Cosmic Grandeur | Proclaims Allah greater than all created existence, mortal anxieties, and trials. |
